About the Artist
Art is inherently investigative. It empowers us to critically examine our world, our
culture, and above all ourselves. In 2012, I began a series of works to address the alarming epidemic of interpersonal violence against women. Stemming violence is never an easy task, it requires researching institutional methodologies, confronting cultural norms, and most importantly, spending time with communities and individuals. This is not work meant for one; each iteration is in response to specific problems faced by partners within my community.
To illuminate the violence that occurs behind closed doors and under dangerous, yet dependant relationships, we must engage new strategies and technologies. Combining domestic craft traditions with contemporary technologies equips artwork to tread simultaneously into public policy, social engagement, advocacy, and outreach. By using touch sensitive paint we can enable women to safely share their stories and help unaware viewers open their eyes. Through cross-stitched QR codes we can empower two dimensional craft to connect women with resource centers.
As an artist, I am incredibly excited about the potential for new tools and technologies to empower citizens to act within their own communities. Throughout my time with survivors of violence, each woman has confided, "I wish someone had listened. I wish someone had asked." Their stories illuminate the immense difference anyone can make, simply within their own social sphere. I may not be able to change the world but this body of work can empower individuals within their own community to replace cultural indifference with empathy and action.
